Hecky: "Our work rate and mentality won us the game!"

8 April 2017

Head Coach praises the Reds' never-say-die attitude as they come away from Ewood Park victorious.

Paul Heckingbottom said he was "delighted" with picking up all three points against Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.

Marc Roberts and Marley Watkins were on target for the Reds inside the opening 10 minutes to secure another superb away win to a growing tally.

Hecky felt the Reds merited the victory for the work they put in and praised the side for not stopping giving their all until the final whistle.

He said, "We're delighted with the win, we spoke before and you have to win a game every single way, the last few games we've been really good with the ball and dominated, today we were more clinical, especially the first 20 minutes and a real threat on the counter.

"But it was our work rate and mentality that won us the game today, Davo only had two shots on target to deal with and he wasn't really stretched because there were lots of blocks and lots of energy to close down in front of him. We have to be pleased with the three points."

The Head Coach feels the result is exactly what the Reds warranted and added that a victory had been coming for the side given the way they had performed in their last few matches.

"I'm stood there and I've said from the last few matches, we're ready to give someone a hiding because we're playing really well, and I expected us to carry on like that. But credit to Blackburn, they're fighting for their lives and have some really good players, we've watched lots of them over the last few weeks and defeat to Reading was their first in seven or eight.

"We saw how they tried to come back, but to a man, one to 11 plus the subs, we defended really well and were always a threat on the counter.

"We probably had more efforts and opportunities through our threat on the counter when we had possession and sometimes it's easier for us to play that way. We've seen teams come to Oakwell and sit behind the ball and it can be difficult to break down, they're waiting to counter you.

"In the last two games at home, we've dealt with threats and looked good, but it's difficult to break a team down who sits in. We've shown another side to our game and got a really good three points.

"We've just had a South Yorkshire derby and Cardiff come to town and they were set up to frustrate and be physical, but that's nothing compared to a team scrapping for its life in the Championship. We had to be ready for that and we had to match their desire and no matter what the score, Blackburn were going to leave everything on the pitch, but we did the same and got the points," he added.

One of the most pleasing aspects for the Head Coach was that the changes he made for the match were justified and helped the Reds to a positive result.

He added he may have to make more ahead of Thursday's trip to Wigan, and gave an update on Adam Hammill and Andy Yiadom's injury worries.

"We're about our performance and what we do and if we get that right, we win games. Throughout the season, we've performed very well.

"They all know what's expected and they need to be ready for Thursday now because it was a real physical game. We matched Blackburn and we may have to make changes for Wigan. Adam Hammill had a toe fracture and is going to be out for a little while, Yids had his operation today and by all accounts, all went well," Heckingbottom said.
